Morgan stopped off at The Coffee Pot for five coffees – no idea if the DI was in but figured she better take him one in case. He’d been a bit peeved last time when she hadn’t brought him a drink; she also bought five assorted brownies to share, to ease the burden a little of the mounting pressure they were under.

The only thing of any consolation in the investigation was that up to now no other bodies had been found. Maybe his close call last night had scared him enough to go to ground until the heat died off, which might just buy them a little time. Although she didn’t think it would stop him entirely. Who knew how he was going to play this? He might want to be caught, be hoping to get caught.

She carried the coffees, managing to only spill a little before she reached the lift. There was no way she was risking stairs carrying this much coffee and her jar of cow parsley. As she pressed the call button with her elbow, she saw Brenda and smiled.

‘Book club is on if you’re still interested. I can pick you up.’

She nodded. ‘I most certainly am, thanks. I’m working until six so it will be easier to just grab me from here if you want, save me walking home. I’ll bring my best perfume with me.’

She winked at Morgan, who laughed before stepping into the lift and using her elbow again to press the button for the floor number. She didn’t tell Brenda she had an ulterior motive for attending, hoping to speak to the other members about Cora and see if they could provide her with further information, or maybe even a suspect which would be the best result she could hope for.

She pushed her way into the office to find it was empty and sighed, placing the flowers on her desk along with the drinks. Grabbing her coffee, she went to the blue room to see if there was a briefing on. She was kind of praying there was, and she hadn’t missed a shout come in on the radio to send them to another body. Voices filtered through the closed door, and she opened it to see the whole gang sitting around the oval table. Marc was at the front talking. He looked at her and nodded.

‘Nice of you to join us, Morgan, but we’ve finished. Ben will update you.’

He glanced down at the coffee cup in her hands; Cain was also staring and mouthing the words ‘traitor’ at her. She turned around walking straight back to the office, wondering what developments there had been.

‘Brookes, where’s my coffee?’

Cain’s deep voice called behind her, but she ignored him and went to sit at her desk. He came in behind her, took a look at the coffee cups and smiled.

‘Phew, that was close. I’d have cried if you hadn’t brought me something decent to drink.’

‘Yeah, I guess I’m not a traitor after all.’

‘Nope, definitely not.’

‘What
